A Beginner’s Guide to Perfume: 5 Fragrances for Men

The world of fragrances is vast and very interesting but unfortunately most people only scratch the surface due to how they approach it. Fragrance is a medium of art, but on the other hand it’s also a tool one uses to smell good. If you take the utilitarian approach to fragrances, you most likely find a fragrance you think smells great and it’s your signature scent. From an artistic perspective every perfumer is trying to convey a message with the fragrances they create. One should be able to close their eyes, inhale and be transported to the place the perfumer was when creating a fragrance. For ease of reference, I have compiled my top 5 fragrances for men.

There are two tiers of fragrances: Designer and Niche.

Designer scents are fragrances created by fashion houses and can mostly be found in department stores. These are mostly mass produced but that doesn’t mean that they lack in quality. Niche scents are more about the art of perfumery and there is a focus on quality ingredients most of the time.

This list of 5 fragrances for men is a combination of designer and niche scents. I strongly suggest sampling a fragrance before buying it. It is worth it to try it in store but spraying a fragrance on a piece of paper doesn’t do it justice since how it reacts to your skin will be different. Most fragrance counters will gladly make you a sample.

Dior Sauvage

This is a powerhouse of a fragrance, one that goes above & beyond and versatile. Sauvage is a fresh and spicy fragrance suitable for all seasons. It is loved universally and has a high compliment factor.

This fragrance launched the house of creed into mainstream superstardom. It has a lot of hype and rightfully so. Aventus is a fruity chypre fragrance, the pineapple and birch notes stand out in this. It truly is a work of art.

Prada L’Homme

Classy, clean, soapy, luxurious. These are words that come to mind when I think about Prada L’Homme, the Iris note in this is simply brilliant. An inoffensive scent with an upscale feel. It is suitable for the office and a black-tie event.
